What Is a 404 Page?

A 404 Page is shown when a page on your website cannot be found. This can happen when a page that used to exist has been deleted but is still linked somewhere or if the wrong URL is added or shared on the web.

404 Errors are a somewhat common occurrence on the web. In fact, if you type in something random after your URL in your browser, you’ll open a 404 page. If you’re a Create User, it’ll look something like this:

Example of a default 404 page on Create

It's important to note that a user receiving a 404 error will not negatively impact your SEO if the page is unintentional. Search engines will eventually stop indexing these pages. You can identify where 404 errors are occurring on your site through Google Search Console and fix these by correcting any broken links if they are a problem to you.

From your visitor’s perspective, however, the 404 page above isn’t a very good first impression of your website. You can easily customise this page on Create to better represent your website and direct users to your most important pages to alleviate any confusion or frustration.

What Should a 404 Page Include?

A good "404 page" should let your user know what has happened and let them know how to get back on track. You should add a simple message to let your user know that the page doesn't exist, and encourage them to click through to another page of your site with a clear call-to-action. This could be your home page, your shop, a selection of featured articles or any other page you think would be suitable.

Including exciting images and inviting text can help to make the page seem like less of an error and can perhaps even work as a polite welcoming to your site.
