How much online retailers will be affected by these changes largely depends on the type of product they sell. Two new brackets of parcel weight and size have been introduced - small parcels and medium parcels. The old 0-750g bracket has gone and been replaced by a more wide-ranging. 0-1kg bracket, leading to a natural price increase of 30p for a standard First Class parcel.

This is just an example of one of the price changes, though. Those sending small but heavy items may well find themselves paying less. Ecommerce blog Tamebay has a good summary of the changes and helpfully compares last year's pricing structure with the new one, so you know where you'd be saving or losing money.

As the weight brackets for parcels have widened significantly, you may find yourself with plenty of space to play with, so if you've ever considered popping a small gift like a pack of sweets in with your orders but been put off by the extra postage, now is a good time to reconsider.

The Royal Mail has issued a printable weight guide and a 'handy' pricing guide to help explain the changes if you're understandably baffled by the overhaul.

As with any price change, there are winners and losers. What side of the fence does your business fall on? Are there any changes you're going to need to make to your business in order to prevail? Let us know in the comments below.
