It is really fantastic seeing what our customers are up to, we love seeing how their businesses evolve and grow online. The all new Customer Showcase is an inside look into the world of the Create customer and a brilliant excuse to pick their brains for their hints, tips and success stories! Starting a business online is both an exciting and nerve wracking time, so for all the Startups out there, read on for a bit of reassurance and a lot of inspiration.
To kick off our new Customer Showcase feature we look to a firm Create favourite, The Crafty Calf. You may have seen the Crafty Calf #FreebieFriday on our Facebook page a few months ago. The Family Tree Papercut was one of our most popular ever giveaways. With an incredible thirty-three thousand (and counting!) followers on Facebook, it is amazing what The Crafty Calf has achieved since first getting online in 2013.
Specialising in decorative papercuts to commemorate occasions, they have a fantastic range of designs from pregnancy keepsakes, to wedding gifts, to new home designs. All the papercuts are designed and lovingly created in the UK, by Sharron.
Her talent has not gone unnoticed with both celebrities and business recognition alike. With a pretty impressive stack of awards and nominations under their belts, including prestigious awards from business heroes such as Theo Paphitis and Jaqueline Gold we spoke to Sharron, who is the founder of The Crafty Calf about what is next for the company, fresh from exhibiting at NEC Baby Show she has an exciting year planned, including starting up The Crafty Calf blog.
Hi Sharron, The Crafty Calf was founded in 2013 and has been a great success, how did you start out?
“The Crafty Calf started out as a hobby in my spare time during maternity leave. After searching high and low for the perfect first wedding anniversary gift, which you traditionally give paper, I decided to make my husband a papercut using the lyrics from our first dance song.
I founded the company after making my husband that papercut, as family and friends wanted to buy one so I decided to start it up.”
Do you have any advice for startups and maintaining a business online?
“Owning a business is like having a baby, it needs feeding with new ideas, lots of attention and time to grow but it will be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do.
Organisation and making sure you have some “offline” time. Being online you are accessible 24 hours a day 365 days a year, it is very easy to get sucked into working every minute you are awake.”
We love your branding, especially your logo and colour scheme! Is this something you gave a lot of thought on before you created your website?
“Honestly, no! I chose the name 'The Crafty Calf' and decided a cow would be the main feature of my logo. I chose blues as I wanted a unisex colour as the craft market is very focused on women but I have a lot of male customers so I wanted to appeal to them too. Thankfully everything just came together by accident (like most of my designs!) and I was pleased with the final branding.”
The importance of social media only seems to increase each year! What do you find works best when promoting your business on social media?
"I find competitions and interactive posts work well for my social media, it gets people interacting with my page and allows new people to find me. I hold regular competitions to keep people interested in my page and to attract new likers."
Do you feel Create has supported your business?
"Create has been tremendous, I cannot rate you enough. You're always an email away and are always implementing user suggestions. I actually left Create for around a month but came straight back as you cannot beat the service. I wouldn’t think about moving again!
We are still on our original package, but I will hopefully move up to the next package one day as it has a lot of features I think would be good."
Thanks for taking the time to speak to us, Sharron! We can't wait to see what's next for The Crafy Calf.
