1 - You can achieve anything

In the words of Doc Brown from Back to the Future: “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything”. This mantra keeps him going throughout all his mishaps, failures and disappointments. These are wise words: there’s no limit to what you can achieve if you have the right mindset and motivation, and your dream of starting your own business is no different.

2 - It’s all about the mindset

All too often, we find reasons why we can’t possibly achieve our dreams. We place limitations on ourselves which stops us from even giving it a go. ‘I don’t know enough’, ‘I’m too old!’, ‘My idea isn’t good enough’... These perceived limitations are just that - perceived; they’re self-imposed barriers we put up to protect ourselves from the painful possibility of failing. These barriers are in your head - so start there. Changing your mindset is a huge step in the right direction. After the Spice Girls, Victoria Beckham’s solo singing career was a massive flop; but she accepted failure and went on to become one of the world’s most successful female fashion designers. Failure can be a blessing and open new doors, and you never know where you’ll next find success.

3 - You don’t need to be ‘business-minded’

Feel like you don’t know enough about business? Guts and enthusiasm are all you need to get started, and you’ll learn along the way. The fact that you’re reading this article is the first step on the journey. Ask yourself: why do you want to go into business in the first place? Is it to be able to spend more time with your family? Is it to have a creative outlet outside of your regular 9-5? Is it to be your own boss? Whatever your reason: realise it; focus on it; use it to drive you forward. If your decision to start your own business online comes from a deeply positive and motivating place, that’s the most valuable mindset you can have.

4 - Any and all experience is valuable

Don’t underestimate yourself. All life experience is valuable when starting your own business online. Richard Branson was a dyslexic school dropout before he made his billions with Virgin. One massive skill that many ‘business-savvy’ people overlook is understanding people. Quality communication with your customers is at the heart of any solid business - if you’re empathetic and enjoy meeting and helping new people, you already have a massive advantage. You don’t need specific qualifications or business experience; you’re not trying to impress anyone or pass someone else’s tests. Remember, the only opinion that matters is your own.

5 - Don’t let your lack of technical expertise limit you

Don’t focus on what you feel you’re missing: instead, think about what you CAN do and roll with that. Every single person has strengths and weaknesses. Many people feel they aren’t techy enough to tackle running their own website, but being tech-savvy doesn’t immediately translate into business success. It’s your passion, creativity and personality that will give you the edge - and Create makes the tech side easy. You can make a website with us easily and in your own time, meaning you have more time to concentrate on the business side of things.

6 - ‘Natural talent’ doesn’t equal success

Feel like you haven’t got any specific talent? Join the club! The concept of talent makes the vast majority of us feel inadequate and discouraged from giving something a go. Check out this post on Huffington Post on why talent is a myth. This article is great because it highlights that dedication and hard work is what gets results. You reap what you sow: if you put time and energy into a project, it will pay off.

7 - Coming up with an idea

Too often people struggle to come up with what they deem a good business idea, or lack confidence in the idea they already have. Passion and self-belief can go a long way! If you’re passionate about something - and we mean ANYTHING - from knitting to mechanics - give it a go! No one is going to be convinced by your product if you don’t wholeheartedly believe in it yourself, so pick something you’ll be proud to sell. Check out Create's tips on how to come up with winning business idea for more inspiration.

8 - Trust yourself

Starting your own online business is all about having confidence. Be brave and trust yourself to handle the outcome.. As Winston Churchill said: ‘Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm’. Start small and work your way up. If it doesn’t work out as you planned - you’ll still be fine, and you’ll have learned a lot in the process. Chin up, good luck and be yourself!
